McCANNMENTUM WEEK IN REVIEW: Sean McCann Crisscrosses Southwest Michigan as National Spotlight Shines on MI-04
KALAMAZOO, MI – With Election Day just over a week away, McCANNmentum is reaching new heights across Michigan’s Fourth Congressional District. From Kalamazoo and Battle Creek to Holland and Benton Harbor, Sean McCann spent the week meeting voters, energizing volunteers, and highlighting the issues facing Southwest Michigan families.
Here’s the latest McCANNmentum you might have missed:
- McCANNmentum RALLIES GRASSROOTS VOLUNTEERS WITH SENATOR GARY PETERS: Sean McCann kicked off the week alongside U.S. Senator Gary Peters in Kalamazoo, where the two rallied volunteers ahead of a canvass launch and emphasized the national stakes of flipping MI-04. “There is no doubt in my mind the whole country is watching us right now,” Peters said. Peters also praised McCann’s record of working across the aisle and delivering results for Michigan families.
- McCANNmentum CRISSCROSSES SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN WITH JOCELYN BENSON AND WINNIE BRINKS: Sean McCann joined Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks for the Driving Down Costs Bus Tour, bringing their shared focus on affordability directly to Southwest Michigan communities. McCann fired up volunteers at canvass launches in Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, stopped at Bell’s Brewery, and met with voters in Holland. The district-wide swing highlighted a contrast between McCann’s approach to constituent engagement and Huizenga’s record, including criticism that the incumbent has not held an in-person town hall since 2018.
- McCANNmentum JOINS BERRIEN COUNTY FAITH LEADERS FOR SOULS TO THE POLLS: McCann joined faith leaders, community organizers, and residents in Benton Harbor for a “Souls to the Polls” early voting event organized by Berrien Connection. Joined by Berrien County Commissioner Chokwe Pitchford and local community leaders, McCann highlighted the importance of civic participation and thanked organizers working to remove transportation barriers and make voting more accessible.
- McCANNmentum TAKES AIM AT WASHINGTON CORRUPTION IN NEW “BROKEN” AD: McCann released a new campaign ad, “Broken,” taking direct aim at Washington corruption and outlining his priorities for reform. The spot calls for banning congressional stock trading, ending massive tax breaks for billionaires, and negotiating lower prescription drug prices. “This place is broken. Really broken,” McCann declares in the ad, drawing a sharp contrast with Huizenga and making the case for changing who Washington works for.
- McCANNmentum MAKES HEADLINES AS DETROIT FREE PRESS SPOTLIGHTS HUIZENGA’S TOUGHEST REELECTION FIGHT YET: The Detroit Free Press put a spotlight on the increasingly competitive race, reporting that Huizenga faces his most organized Democratic challenger yet. The coverage highlighted growing voter frustration over gas prices and inflation, along with McCann’s fundraising strength and the shifting political landscape in Southwest Michigan.
- McCANNmentum EARNS NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: The Washington Examiner highlighted how MI-04 is one of the most competitive races in the country, as McCann is making affordability and everyday costs central to his campaign. The outlet pointed to McCann’s work on policies including an expanded earned income tax credit and free school meals, as well as his focus on rising utility bills and the J.H. Campbell coal plant controversy. The Examiner also highlighted McCann’s fundraising strength as he takes his economic message across Southwest Michigan in the final stretch to flip this seat.
THE FINAL STRETCH: With Election Day just over a week away, McCann’s campaign is continuing its district-wide outreach, meeting voters across Southwest Michigan and focusing on the economic challenges facing families. From national attention and high-profile visits to volunteer canvasses and community events, the past week underscored the intensity of the contest for MI-04 entering the final days before November 3. With the race rated a toss-up, Michigan’s Fourth Congressional District remains squarely at the center of the battleground..

About Sean McCann:
Sean McCann has spent his career standing up to the powerful and on behalf of people in Southwest Michigan. From cracking down on slumlords to serving as a State Senator, Sean has fought to change broken systems. In the State Legislature, he stood up to polluters to protect Lake Michigan, and he cut taxes for working families.
Sean knows Washington is broken and he’ll fight for the change we need – banning members of Congress from trading stocks, negotiating for lower drug prices, and stopping massive tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, so we put hard-working people first.
Born and raised in Michigan, Sean attended Western Michigan University before serving as a Kalamazoo Commissioner, State Representative, and now State Senator for Southwest Michigan. Along the way, he’s earned a reputation among Democrats and Republicans alike as a serious problem-solver who works across the aisle and stands up for families trying to make ends meet.
As a husband and father raising his family in Michigan, Sean understands what’s at stake for working families. In Congress, he’ll bring the same work ethic, common sense, and determination he’s brought to public service throughout his career, and fight every day to make Washington work for people it’s supposed to serve.
About the race for Michigan’s 4th Congressional District:
MI-04 is one of the country’s key 2026 battlegrounds. The R+3 district has been named a top “Red to Blue” race by the DCCC and rated a toss-up by Sabato’s Crystal Ball. Cook Political Report has consistently moved this race in Democrats’ direction, calling the district “a bright spot for Democrats.” Poll after poll has shown Sean McCann leading Bill Huizenga, and McCann continues to post strong fundraising numbers.
According to Cook, Sean McCann’s State Senate seat (MI-19) “makes up about a third of the 4th District and includes 45% of the 4th’s primary electorate.” Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson each carried MI-04 with more than fifty percent of the vote in 2022.
MI-04 covers Southwest Michigan and includes the cities of Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Holland, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and the outer suburbs of Grand Rapids including Ottawa County.
Sean has also received endorsements from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Senator Elissa Slotkin, Congresswoman Hillary Scholten, former Congressman Mark Schauer, over 15 labor groups, and over 70 local elected officials and community leaders.
